Andy that would be an 1855 registration you are describing with all the extra coloumns... We were later than England with statutory registration and only started in 1855 and we did get a wee bit carried away to begin with. They shortened them a bit in 1856 though! Congratulations on finding an 1855 registration, I love it when it happens as it really helps loads. Shaz x

Am battling away with a load of Scottish names at the moment and was wondering whether there were any particular rules concerning the above. I have a few Jeans that appear elsewhere as Janes, is it that generally Jeans can be referred to as Janes (or vice versa), or is it that whenever information was recorded, it ended up being misheard? Also, I've been looking at some Scottish birth certificates. In the Statutory birth register for Brechin (1855+), the amount of information for each birth seems to vary. In some parts there is no more info listed than for an English birth, yet for one child I found, it listed when the parents were married, how old they were at the time of the child's birth, plus also recorded that newly born Jessie was Jean's 4th child! I suppose it may depend on the registrar but there were certainly more columns of info for some births than others.
