Hi Whilst searching for a birth at sea I was told to try:- the Registrar General of Shipping and Seamen - established by the Merchant Shipping Act of 1872 - records held at GRO London, as they are responsible for registrations relating to shipping etc. Don't know if that helps at all. (not done it myself yet) Mandy

HELENA IN REPLY TO YOUR QUERY RE MASTER MARINER THE DATE IS MOST LIKELY THE DATE HE OBTAINED HIS MASTERS TICKET HAVING PASSED THE EXAM, THE NUMBER OC042876 IS PROBALLY HIS MECHANT NAVY NUMBER,(I HAVE ONE R891****) THE OFFICIAL NUMBER IS THE SHIPS OFFICIAL NUMBER EVERY SHIP HAS AN OFFICIAL NUMBER WHICH IS PART OF THE LLOYDS REGISTERY IF YOU KNOW WHAT THE SHIPPING COMPANY'S NAME WAS YOU CAN ASK THEM FOR THE RECORDS OF THE DEATH ALSO IT WILL BE IN THE SHIPS LOG WHICH EITHER THE COMPANY HAVE OR THE NATIONAL RECORDS OFFICE WILL HAVE THEY ALSO KEEP THE LICENCES OF MARINERS. I HAVE FOUND A LOT OF MY RELATIVES FROM THERE FROM THE EARLY 18TH CENTURY IE TICKET NUMBERS ECT AND RANK. EVERY ONE HAS TO SIGN ON TO A SHIPS MANIFEST. HOPE THIS HELPS BEST WISHES DAVID CAPT RETD

If you google 'Modasa' you will find a great deal of info about the ship - I could fing no reference to a death in Marseills though. Bob

A Master Mariner is the deck officer holding a master's certificate in a merchant ship; he is qualified to command a ship. So a senior officer but not captain (who confusingly was often referred to a Master)

Helena it could be the number of his seamansticket - which all mariners needed before the could sail. I dont know a lot about the tickets as all my mariners so far are early 1800s before they needed them. The records are kept at the national archives at Kew Zoe

I have just received a death certificate for my great uncle, rank is Master Mariner. O.C. 042876. 12/11/18. The date of his death certificate is Aug, 1923. Ship Modasa, official number 146272, died at Marseilles Harbour. Any help on the meanings of the above greatly appreciated. Happy Easter All. LOl Helena
