A Lighterman transferred cargoes from ship to shore, thus lightening the ship, or ship to ship. A Waterman is someone whose trade is ferrying passengers. If you need any help finding either of these let me know.

Hi Julie, if you check my other thread for lightermen look ups on the records board you will see they were 'sort of' the equivalent of the current juggernaut drivers, taking goods up and down the river over a licenced area. They would also go to large ships to unload some cargo onto their boats for delivery. Watermen were the equivalent of black cab drivers - they would take passengers for fares. Both were very skilled jobs and took an average of 7 years apprenticeship with a master.
