Elizabeth, They're clearly playing hide-and-seek with you! A few thoughts .... 1) You could try getting the marriage cert for Eleanor & Richard GROVES. It might show Eleanor's surname(s) - if she was married previously if would say Eleanor BLOGGS (maidenname), formerly BINGHAM. Eleanor could have been illegitimate of course and therefore the marriage with Richard GROVES would be Eleanor's first. 2) Subsequent Censuses - did they move, d'you think? At that time, they could even have taken an assisted package to the New World ... and Poplar is right near the 'Port of London' if indeed it was operating on such a scale at that time. 3) Parish Records - if it looks like the family had been in Poplar for some time, you could try looking at Parish Registers for vital events for both GROVES and BINGHAM. It's also worth considering the non conformist churches - Methodists/Baptists rather than just CofE. 4) Bad luck - you don't say where Matilda was in the 'subsequent' census(es). It could be that she was orphaned! Whatever the case, do let us know how you get along - and good luck! Kind regards Jane

Could I have some advice please? I have traced my way back to Matilda Sophia Bingham born 1859 (Poplar) and whose parents are William Bingham and Eleanor Kiburn (info from birth cert). However I can find no marriage details for her parents (1837online, LDS, BMD, Ancestry.com checked). Neither can I find mention of them as a couple in Census's 1861 onwards. However in the 1861 census a Matilda bingham appears with a mother called Eleanor but with surname of Groves married to Richard Groves. Matilda is cited as 9yo when she would have been 2. I am wondering if Eleanor remarried but can find no trace of the marriage, Willaim Bingham's death or a divorce (National Archivist). Neither can I find the Groves/Binghams (except Matilda) in subsequent census'. Can anyone suggest how I could verify the information I think I have and make sense of their story?
