hi lawrence Haddingtonshire became East Lothian. I believe 100 percent of 1841 for this county is on Freecen and quite a bit of 1851 too if I remember correctly. Had a look and didn't spot a likely Matthew - except a 14 year old Matthew Shivver in Italics - perhaps this indicates that the transcriber wasn't certain what the name was. On the 1851 at Garvald, there is an Agnes Skirving widow age 52 born West Indies - now there's exotic ! If you are having trouble with Agnes' maiden name - the www(.)talkingscot(.)com site has a gallery where you can upload images and a forum where you can ask people for help with deciphering . Best of luck Sally

These children are listed on familysearch as having parents William Skirving and Agnes Mathie. I know they are not the right dates to be Mathew's siblings, but unusual name so could be related to yours somewhere. International Genealogical Index - British Isles 23. Hi Cap. I have his death rec in 1878 from scotlandspeople and it lists his parents as William & Agnes Skirving ( cannot make out her maiden name). I have been unable to locate any dates with regards to his parents; they are not in the 1871 census. Perhaps if somebody has a census list from 1841 or 1851 it may show if he has any sibs and if he was still living with his folk. Thank you, Larry

Lawrence, Not all births and marriages pre 1855 were recorded in Scotland, only those in the OPR register of the Church of Scotland. You should try searching for his death cert. as this will give you his parents names. provided they were known by the informant. Liz
