I think google can translate and I also think that the place you want is STAVANGER. Perhaps the Norwegian embassy can point you in the right direction. NELL

You might come across a small yet iratating problem wile searching for Norwigen ansestors and that is THEY DO'NT KEEP THE SAME NAME, what I meen is that Some one called say Seven Olson will not have a father Calld Olson but some thing like this Ole Steveson, in other words the first name of a father becomes the second name of the son. This practices depends were and when in Norway you are looking. Try and find a home page that will explaine the ins and outs of it.

Hi Jenny, here's another couple of sites you could try http://www.rootsweb*com/~wgnorway/index2.htm http://www.norwayheritage*com/ships/names.htm (click on the link) and remember to replace * with . Christine

Hi you can also look on slekt.net. click on find and surname and letter of alphabet - if you can find them there is a wealth of information there.

If you go to norway-heritage.com you can post on their forum. I started with someone born in 1869 and are now back to 1709 They give you a lot of help

My relatives are also from Stavanger but had no luck with searching Olson as hsi parents were not Olson - fathers first name was Ole and the son takes the first name of his father and adds son or sen. The daughter takes her fathers first name - say John and adds datter so her surname will be johnsdatter. Very confusing.

Hope this helps

If you are near a LDS centre, they have a film and fiche called

Major genealogical record sources in Iceland

which sounds like a useful document to get hold of.
