IN 1935 MY FATHER, THOMAS JOHN PETTENGELL, BORN 1869 IN HITCHIN HERTS, MARRIED MY MOTHER PRISCILLA, MAY, (HART) MAIDEN NAME. I WAS BORN OCTOBER 1936 AND NAMED THOMAS, JOHN MARTIN, THE MARTIN AFTER A STEPBROTHER WHO WAS ABOUT 20 YEARS OLDER THAN ME. I KNEW VERY LITTLE OF HIM, ONLY SAW HIM 3-4 TIMES BACK IN THE 1950's and 1960's AND CANNOT TRACE HIM USING PETTENGELL AS A SURNAME. I CAN ONLY ASSUME THAT HE RETAINED HIS BIRTH MOTHERS MARRIED NAME AND THAT SHE WAS A WIDOW WHEN SHE MARRIED MY FATHER. I'VE NO IDEA OF HER CHRISTIAN OR PREVIOUS MARRIED NAME AND CANNOT WORK OUT HOW TO GO ABOUT FINDING THIS INFORMATION. I HAVE TRIED ON 1837.COM TO GO BACK FROM 1934 AND HAVE CHECKED ALL OF THE YEARS COVERING THE FIRST WORLD WAR (THINKING IN TERMS OF MARTINS MOTHER BEING A WIDOW FROM THIS PERIOD) I HAVE BEEN LOOKING AT PETTENGELL MARRIAGES, SO FAR NOTHING. MARTIN WAS IN THE MERCHANT NAVY ON OIL TANKERS DURING WW2 AND I KNOW THAT I CAN CHECK WITH RECORDS A KEW BUT WONDER IF ANYONE CAN COME UP WITH ANY OTHER IDEAS AS TO HOW I CAN TRACK MARTINS MOTHER AND PROVIDE ME WITH HER SURNAME??
