I know you can do an address search on the 1901 census to establish who lived at a particular address. Can you do the same for 1881 census anywhere? I am looking for the residents of 16 Hill Street, Surrey. TIA CLaire xx |

Do you have a town in Surrey? I guess each town would have at least one Hill Street so there could be hundreds in the county. |

Unforunately I don't. It is an addy on a marriage cert so perhaps it is in the same parish (brides address) St Mary Newampton (Newhampton???) I just thought if I could get a list of Hill Streets I could go by process of elimination? Claire xx |

Oh! St Saviour! Durrrr! Am I stoopid or what! Well that is something to go on. So would I have to look at electoral rolls to find out who was living there in 1881? Claire xx (sorry, that was ANOTHER question wasn't it) ;o) |

Claire Info from Genuki list of registration districts: St. Saviour Southwark Created 1st July 1837. Abolished 1st January 1902 (renamed Southwark). In Surrey until 1889. Sub-districts : Borough Road; Christ Church; Kent Road; London Road; Newington St. Mary; Newington Trinity; St. Saviour; Walworth St. Peter. GRO volumes : IV (1837-51); 1d (1852-1901). Newington St. Mary (1870-1901), Southwark Christ Church, Southwark St. George (1870-1901), Southwark St. Saviour. Registers now in Southwark district Obviously you are wanting the subdistrict of Newington St Mary. I can't see a Hill Street in the right area for my modern map of London. Gendocs List of Victorian Streets has these possibilities: Hill Street SOUTHWARK [1899] Hill Street, All Souls, ST SAVIOUR [1862] Hill Street, Berkeley Chapel, ST GEORGE HANOVER SQUARE [1862] Hill Street, Borough Road, ST SAVIOUR SOUTHWARK [1881] Hill Street, St Agnes, ST SAVIOUR [1862] Hill Street, St Alphege, ST SAVIOUR [1862] Hill Street, St Paul, Walworth, ST SAVIOUR [1862] Hill Street, St Peter, Walworth, ST SAVIOUR SOUTHWARK [1881] The electoral roll of the period will only give names of those eligible to vote - male householders. nell |

Sorry I didn't reply sooner to say thank you for all your help. I have server probs and got kicked off the web. :o( Anyway, Thanks so much for the list of Hill Streets! It is a great start. I know the brides fathers name so I can perhaps narrow it down further by using the electoral roll then. Thanks again. I feel like I am on the move again. :o) Claire xx |
