I THINK first cousins twice removed because it is how far 'removed' you have to get before you share a common ancestor????? Oh I don't know.....isn't there a link on Genes somewhere?.....I'll have a look. Hang on! Claire xx

Geoff is correct. Third cousins. The removed bit comes in when you are the other person are of a different geneation i.e. your great grandad but their great great grandad. Take the number of great's (in this case 2) and add one more to make what cousin. (3rd cousin) If you share grandparents you are 1st cousins great grandad parents - 2nd cousins great great grandparents - 3rd cousins and so on Margaret

Hi Dawn, Your gt gt grandparents (4 generations back) children were siblings obviously, (3 generations back) so their children were 1st cousins. (2 gens back). Those cousins children (1 gen back) would be second cousins to each other. So YOUR generation, i.e you and your relative who you are asking about, are 3rd cousins. Meaning one of your parents is his/her parent's 2nd cousin, your grandparents were 1st cousins, gt grandparents were siblings, gt gt grandparents were husband and wife. Sorry to be so long winded! The removed part doesn't come into until you are talking about relatives from a different generation to you. Eg, your relative in question's parent would be your 2nd cousin once removed.

Go to http://www.genealogy.about*com/library/nrelationshipchart.htm There's a really simple chart there. (Don't forget to remove* and replace with. )

Thank you all of you, adding the greats + one extra seems easy enough . Now correct me if I'm wrong on this one, on the other side I have made contact with someone who we share the same gt grandparents so he is my second cousin? Have I got the hang of it now? Dawn

For those of you who have FTM 2005 there is a built in relationship calculator. Select the first person, then click on Tools, Relationship Calculator Click Change, for the second person and find the one you want, then Calculate. Very impressive when you can tell the person who has just contacted you that you are her 4th cousin 3 times removed's great aunt... There is probably a similar function on other Family Tree Software.
