Hi All, Thanks so much for all the replies, didn't see them till just now. Haven't been able to get to the PC till now, my Son's been doing homework - doesn't he realise how important my family tree is!! (Cate thinks she might have to re-assess her priorities, after all it is Son's GCSE's this year:-S) Anyway, the areas I am researching are mainly Stockport (specifically Heaton Norris) and Sandbach!! Does anyone know why Stockport seems to leap over the Cheshire/Lancashire border at each census?? Thanks for the offer Lou. You have already looked at the 1861 census for me for one line of my family, but I don't like to ask too many favours as I am unable to offer help in return - don't want to take the Mick!! Cate :))

Oooooo Stalybridge eh Lou? My other half was lodging there when I first met him. Is Doris still the landlady at the Church? Mind you that was 21 years ago! lol Jeanette x

Cate If you let me know which areas of Lancashire you're researching I might be able to help with those look ups. Hello Claire and Sarah Lou (now in bright and sunny Stalybridge but ex Northwich...we should organise a meet-up, boy I miss the place!) x

Cate, Some of the libraries around my area (macc / congleton) hold the records and census there, but i will say that the records office at Chester is fantastic. I had my first visit there a couple of weeks ago and it certainly opened my eyes. I couldn't beleive the amount of info kept there or that i was basically allowed to look at what i wanted without having to ask for it (the librarian at Congleton is a right pain in the a*se - he keeps averything under lock and key) I would certainly advise a trip to Chester! c x

Have you thought of joining the Family History Societies for Cheshire/Lancashire. They sell lots of info on CD/Fiche as well as obtaining help from the Societies on your ancestors. The cost to join is about £10 a year and you get 4 mags a year. To find ones of interest to you just google Family History Socities and you should get them all for the whole of the country and choose the ones of interest to you from the list available. Janet

Hi Cate I think some record offices may sell copies of some of the parish registers on fiche or cd. It might be worth ringing and asking them. If they are on fiche, you could then ring your local records office and ask if you could book a reader to view them on. Jeanette x

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I'll have to arrange a trip to Lancashire/Cheshire to look up some records as I am in Suffolk!! Cate :-S

Hi, There should be copies of all the parish records of the county in the county record office. Even if you find something on the IGI you should check it with the actual parish records because there are many errors on the IGI, although it can be a useful guide. Gwynne

In most cases you will have to, unless it it one that has been transcribed onto IGI.

Am I right in assuming that to read parish registers I have to go to the relevant parish/county library?? Cate :)
