If you look at the transcriptions of the 1881 census on www.familysearch.org which is free, you can see the sort of info available. As with any other information there are errors. people often changed their age and place of birth from one census to the next. nell

Twinkle

Twinkle Report 23 Mar 2005 18:43

Place of birth: sometimes just a country ('Ireland'), sometimes a more helpful town specified. Age: remember the census was taken in March/April. The question asked was usually 'what was your age last birthday?' A 10-year old on the 1881 census could have been born in 1870 or 1871. The exception is 1841. The ages are rounded down to the nearest five for anyone over 15; so someone down as 25 could be as old as 29. The place of birth isn't specified either, just a yes or no to whether they were born in the county in which they were living.
