The 'times removed' bit is the number of generations difference between her and your relative - in this case, her great-great-grandparents would be in the same generation as your ancestor (i.e. she has to go back 4 generations until both lines are at the same generation). Then, the nth number of cousins is the number of generations back from there until both lines get to the common ancestor, minus one! Therefore, in this case the common ancestor is another eight generations back from your ancestor (8 - 1 = 7). So, the common ancestor who links your two trees is 4 + 8 = 12 generations back from her.... quite distant really!! Richard

I`ve been contacted by someone who`s distant relative of mine is her 7th cousin 4 times removed .Can anyone explain? Rosalyn
