Michael Report 22 Mar 2005 11:19

My cousin Joshua Merrin/Merring was murdered in the Newark area in 1851/1852. I have his death certificate of 20th Jan 1852 which states he died of Inflammation caused by a rupture of the bladder produced by some villians unknown. He apparently was murdered (at Aslockton?) by 2 thieves while delivering wages to canal workers. The thieves also stole his gold watch, and left him for dead by the roadside. He survived long enough to tell the story, but died soon after. I would like to obtain a copy of the coroners report or any newspaper articles relating to this, but cant find anywhere online. Can anyone help me please? Cheers Mike

You should contact the office in Newark - they should have the coroners inquest if you are lucky and also a newspaper archive. Their website is probably available online.

Michael, If you've had no other offers of help, I will try to get to the Newark Library tomorrow afternoon and have a look at the newspaper archives. Email me to remind me! Elisabeth

Inquest papers are routinely destroyed :-( but there will certainly be coverage of this in the local paper. I have myself found inquest reports on microfilmed copies in a local history centre. nell
