The Militia was still around in the 1870's as I had one who was in the North Lincs Militia after leaving the army in 1872. Try googling TNA Kew for Militia. Janet

Sounds like you have a miss-scrib. Play about with the spelling of the name. But like I said there was no need for him to be called up and he was to old (prob) any way.

Hello Peter, Thomas Wildes dies in 1889 in Burton on Trent, but is not listed on the 1881 census, his first wife died 1875,but his second wife Mary Ann Wildes is missing, his son Robert about 21 in 1881 is also missing and he was living in a different place in 1871 and is listed, but whole family missing in 1881,thats why I wondered if Thomas may have been re called about that time. His death certificate has him listed as army pensioner. Many thanks anyway. Brenda

What age would he of been on last census. If its 40+ then you should be looking for eather a death cert or a miss-scrib. Also as there was no big wars around that time (?) there would be no need for him to be called up.

My gg grandfather Thomas Wildes served as a colour sergeant in the Army c!860.On the 1871 census he is an agricultural labourer(army reservist) in Essex. On the 1881 he cannot be found. Is it possible he was called up or had to serve even though he had retired, and would appear on the army census.
