In Buckie, Banffshire, There are dozens and dozens of families named Jappy/Jappey, But to differentiate them all ,they are called Jappey Lad, Jappey John, Jappey Buf, etc, etc; can anyone tell me how this came about? or maybe the name of a book that lists all the various added names , to the name of Jappey. I might add that these extra names are not entered on their birth certificates, If any one knows when this first started or any information on this I would be pleased to hear from you , Thank you , Vicky

Where most of the community have a small number of surnames, they need something to differentiate between the various families. Such practices happened in both Wales and Yorkshire and doubtless other areas. George Redmonds book on surnames (I can't remember the title, but you should be able to find it by Googling) deals with the practice in Yorkshire. If parish records don't make distinctions, you may have to use wills, land records etc to sort them out. Someone with Scottish expertise may know the sort of records you could find.
