STEPHENSON The 1881 Census shows 4 young girls aged from 1 to 17 living with a family in Kirkburton, W.Yorkshire and noted as Boarders or BRD. N/T of births at PRO. N/T of death of mother in child birth. 1871 Census at PRO to poor to read, the 81 census said that they were born in Manchester but feel this doubtful. All 4 remained in the North East area until mature. What does BRD mean and why were they boarders? - and where can I search next. |
