That was along my lines of thinking...kind of a privately employed security guard to watch the property of someone wealthy? Claire xx

I would hazard a guess that private just means not public - ie not a watchman for the general community, but for a specific family, household or firm. Nell

Sorry to be a pain! ;o) I have found several descriptions of watchman incl. watching over a graveyard, night watchman/security guard, and police man, but what is a Private Watchman? ( I am asking in ref to an occupation stated on 1881 census). TIA Claire xx
