I have found a rellie (I think) on 1841 census and she is 6 yrs old. I read somewhere that on one of the census they rounded the age, but I can't remember if it was up or down. Can anyone tell me this and maybe what age range my rellie could have been. I think I have found her in 1871 but there is a big difference in her ages.

Children under 15 should be the exact age. The younger the child, the more likely the parents are to get the age right, but this doesn't always follow. There are all sorts of reasons over time for people getting ages wrong. One is the way you date things. Suppose someone was born during the First Gulf War. I say he was born during the Gulf War and someone assumes he is two.

Many thanks to you bothfor that info. The age difference is about 10 years so I'm now wondering whether it is the same person. Regards Ellen

I'd look for them on different censuses. It is probably the wrong person if you expected them to be 16 in 1841, but do you know whether the age in 1871 is correct?
