Or Kenya in Kent. Or Leichenstein in Leicester. Or Thadwete in Shadwell. Or Negania Wales in Virginia Waters?? We can live in hope (or hipe if we are ancestry transcribers)

I would guess that most of these places use the input of a 3 letter code eg LIEchtenstein LEIcestershire I've made the same sort of mistakes when transcribing for FreeBMD - Penrith can easily finish up as Penkridge if you're not careful.

Hopefully when they do the 1911 they will have a computer programme that can check place names against gazetteers. I do find it odd that my great-grandma's birth place is given as 'Camligger' when only 2 people further down in the list it says quite clearly 'Cambridge'. Surely the person transcribing must have thought - perhaps Camligger should be Cambridge too? Similarly I have found two members of a family one born Cobham Surrey and the other in Cotham, surrey! nell

Geoff, hats off to BMD transcribers they are much more accurate and I guess more dedicated. I think we had a thread before on ancestry transcribers and it seems a lot of them are probably students doing temp work during vacations, so you can see how at some point some of them will get tired, bored or both!
