Christopher's reply suggests my theory may be wrong - although the GRO transcribers haven't proved to be completely infallible. Looks like Guinevere's suggestion is the only one likely to give a definitive answer. It might be worth ringing the GRO to see if they can confirm that there really are two different records? I had a look on FreeBMD. the volume & page refs are almost identical Peterboro(ugh) 15 489 & 15 469 in Mar & Sep quarters respectively. I suspect it's one marriage but has been mistranscribed in one case into the wrong quarter. Have a look at http://images.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/choose.pl And see if you can find the records yourself. Sorry. Just looked. You can see the lists for 1845 & 1847 but not 1846. That makes me even more suspicious. That usually happens only if the images aren't good. If they aren't good they'd be difficult to transcribe. You could shell out to look at 1837Online - or see if anyone has a couple of spare credits to look at the two quarters for you. Christine

Ancestry uses a copy of the FreeBMD database. So, if it's on Ancestry, it's on FreeBMD; occasionally not v.v. if the database has just been updated. Does the Local RO have a website? Some of them do, and they're free and searchable and some of the records are quite recent. The GRO records are quarterly transcriptions of the local ones. The GRO ref will give you a year and a quarter which can be used by the Local office. The local ref will be very different - a quite different format. If you have a look at some of the local sites (a number are listed on www.ukbmd.org.uk), you'll see why the GRO ref doesn't work at the local office. good hunting! Christine

I am very confused. I have 2 Ann Sindalls both married in 1846. One was married in march 1946 and the other Sept 1846. I have been down to my local registry office and requested both copies. One I have received the other they say they have no record of it. They are both on BMD and Ancestory.com. The volume and page number is no use to them as their register pages do not go that high. Can anyone give me advise on what to do next. Vanessa
