Chloe - That Madeline Ormston is very interesting. I've just been searching Freebmd for marriages between 1880 and 1883 with the surname Laws and came upon this entry in March 1882. Laws Isaac S. Shields 10a 796 Leith Charlotte S. Shields 10a 796 Massie Alexander S. Shields 10a 796 Ormston Magdalene S. Shields 10a 796 I've also found a birth for a Mary Lizzie Laws in South Shields in 1886; there were also two births for a Robert Laws and a Robert Bertram Laws, both in South Shields in 1883. We might be on the right track. Thanks, Brenda

Hi Brenda This is the easy bit. If you search for William Hawkins marriage 1886 - 1891 in Durham on freebmd, you get this: Surname First name(s) District Vol Page -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Marriages Dec 1888 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HAWKINS William Sunderland 10a 894 LAWS Madeline Sunderland 10a 894 ROBINSON Sarah Jane Sunderland 10a 894 SWANSON Andrew Austin Sunderland 10a 894 It would be worth ordering this certificate to get Madeline's father's name, her then address and the names of the witnesses.

Unfortunately I don't know Madelines maiden name or when she remarried. I haven't looked for this side of my family for a while and Durham in 1901 was only added fairly recently, so I thought today at lunch I'd have a peep. On her wedding cert in 1920 she lists her stepfather, William Hawkins as her father, so I'm guessing she wasn't very old when her real father died. Infact on her weding cert she is listed as Mary Elizabeth Laws, Donaldson, nee Hawkins! So she was also a widow when she married my Grandfather! I will also take a look at the 3 year old, thanks for that. Brenda

Brenda - I've had a few like this, where the one person I'm looking for was with relatives elsewhere when the census was completed (maybe even living there on a semi-permanent basis!) There is a Mary Laws in 1891, aged 3, listed as niece to a John & Susan Butcher - even if this isn't the right one, it could give you some clues where else to look? Sarah

Do you know Madeline's maiden name? Do you know when she remarried? Such a small child may well have been living with grandparents or maternal aunts or uncles. It is possible that she is listed with their surname, if you have searched on Ancestry and cannot find her.

Looking for my maternal Grandmother, Mary Laws, born in Durham, Hebburn around 1886. I've found her family in 1901 (Durham), she is listed as a stepdaughter to William Hawkins, wife Madeline. Lots of children in this family, Mary is there aged 14, along with her brother Robert aged 17. In 1891 (Durham) Robert is again with this family, but there is no sign of Mary, who would only have been about 4. Where did she go? Can anyone help? Thanks, Brenda
