Help with marriage please.

If a man was widowed in 1871, then maried again would it say on the marriage that he was widowed or a bachelor? because I have found another marriage for this person from record office and it says bachelor on it. Sue............ |

It should say widowed by rights Sue, but of course that would only be if his wife was dead! What if he just split up from his first wife and remarried? As you know, divorce was near impossible in those days. Jeanette x |

Sue It should say he was widowed on the 2nd marriage cert, so this is either a genuine mistake - the registrar failed to ask/he failed to declare/registrar wrote the wrong info - or a deliberate covering up of the fact that he was previously married. nell |
