Hi Jo, I've just had a look at my names and there doesn't seem to be any connection. I haven't been able to track your Thomas down in the censuses either. but did you notice on the 1901 at the top of the page is an Arthur Albert Hales who gives his birthplace as India. I wonder if he is telated in any way to your Thomas and that Thomas could have been out in india for some of the censuses. Do you have Thomas's Marriage cert? That should have his father's name on it and should help narrow the search down a bit. Jeanette x

Oh Crikey! I've got Davey's and Hales in my tree connected to each other! lol. And I can't quite remember but I think there was a mention of Plumstead too! lololol. Is your surname connected to Hales? Thing is, my half second cousin (!) had been researching that side so I haven't quite got a grip on it. Give me some time Joanna and I'll get back to you - probably after tea if that's ok. Jeanette x

Hi Joanna I've got a few name changes in my tree. One was definitely down to illegitimacy but not sure why for the others yet! lol Do you want to give us some names and dates so we could have a look for him. Jeanette x

I don't have all the details as yet - I believe he came from a 'well to do' family but he broke away from them (probably the black sheep) Jo

Does the informant have any idea why he changed his name. I have this in my family tree due to a murder in the family and kids being ashamed of the past family history. Good Luck tracey

I've spent ages searching for information on my gggrandfather - I've found his marriage and traced him back to the 1891 census but he does not seem to exist on the previous census. I've recently been informed that he had in fact changed his name prior to his marriage. I've come to a dead end and really need to find out what his birth name was. Would this change be recorded anyway? Jo
