Hi Has anyone encountered the problem I have now discovered in my family tree - at some point in the mid 1800's three of my ggg grandfather's brothers changed their name. They all started out as Bass but three of them then became Vass. Was this normal practice? Maybe my line had some secret so dark that all the others disowned them! Steph

Hi Yes, changed on all Census returns. I have contacted the Archivist in that County to see if there was any official change of name. I have copies of paperwork confirming that they were all Bass at marriage. Steph

Yes, seen all the Censuses from 1851 onwards, Vass all the way down the line and throughout the country as they moved away. Steph
