Royal or Merchant Navey?

I have found fishermen on census with just a rough idea of where they are off the coast! I think it rather depended on how diligent the captain was. If your chap was Merchant Navy or Royal Navy the records should be a Kew. |

Not so, some boats stayed out for days, Thay had to cach a quota or no wages. And it might not of been a fishing boat, coastal tramps could of been another posabilaty, they were out for days at a time. |

Yeah I know, nice little town. Surely Alfred would have come home in the evenings if he was working on a boat. Or perhaps he was at sea. Are there any websites where I can trace his records. Fern. |

Sorry I forgot to mention that on the 1891 census he does not appear either but there is nothing under the wife occupation. I think it might be worth me ordering their youngest daughter's certificate as she was born after 1891 and maybe order Alfred's death certificate. Fern. |

As he was 53 at the time of the census and 58 when he died adding were he lived I would say he was a Fisherman. It might pay you to look up ship/boat loses from that time. |

How can I determind whether my great, great grandfather was in the Royal or Merchant Navey. I know he was definatley a seaman because in the 1901 census under wife's occupation it stated husband away at sea. I have their children's birth certificates but they gives no clues. His name was Alfred Blackman born 1848 in Chislehurst, Kent and died 1906 in Whitstable, Kent. Any suggestions are welcomed. Fern. |
