Could some kind person please explain this facility to me in words of one syllable! lol. Does it mean that if we can't find a BMD on the site, we might find it on the images? Do you have to download the images onto your computer? Thanks. Jeanette x

The images it has are like the ones from 1837online. It doesn't have them all though. You can search though, but when you find the first letter of the surname, you have to guess on which image the one you want might be. You don't have to download them, except to your temp folder to view them. I save the ones I know are right.

Thanks ever so much Tracy. One other daft question! lol. Do you have to download any programs in order to be able to read them? Jeanette x

No, you can view them as pictures or as a PDF file.

FreeBMD had not transcribed the the birth registration details of my greatgrandfather but I found them by by looking through the images of the registration lists - haven't been able to find his first marriage though. You can only drill down to the surname letter; after that you will have to downloading images until you find the correct one (hopefully. Pages from the late 1860s onwards are typed and are about 200k bytes; earlier pages are hand-written - some have very dark backgrounds and the files are up to 7M bytes - can take up to 2 mins to download even with broadband. Some of the earlier typed pages are impossible to read as are some of the hand-written pages. Not all years are available and not all quarters within years are available. Good hunting, Peter.

Hi Robin, They are the images of the pages like you see on the 1837 site except they are free to view. Go to the FreeBMD homepage and you will see an option to view images. Click on there and away you go! Jeanette x
