Marriage Cert - maiden names?

Anybody help with this? I need to order a cert for my gg grandparents marriage - his name is JOHN LINES and her name is MARY LAYTON - but I know this is a married name, as on the 1881 census they are shown as man and wife, but with two sons of hers - both LAYTONS. My question is would their marriage cert show her previous married name(ie Layton), or her maiden name and should it still have her father's name, and finally - would you order the cert on his name alone, in case she married in her original maiden name, which I don't know at present???????? Sorry to go on, but I'm confusing myself here!! Thanks Trudy

Trudy - all the certs I have where wife was previously married, it gives the maiden name and previous married name, normally noted as 'formerly'. I think you can order the marriage certificate based on his name but the GRO number would help and make it cheaper. You can ask for the certificate quantifying that his wife should be Mary

The cert for marriage to John would have her previous name as...Mary Layton, formerly ??? Anne.

Thanks both of you, I have the GRO ref, so I'll just order it with his name and christian name of Mary for the bride.

Hi Trudy, If a woman had been married before she usually remarried using her previous married name rather than her maiden name. Yes, the father should still be named. Do you know for sure that she had been married before? Just because her sons have the name Layton doesn't mean she was married. You could send for one of the sons birth certs as this will give any previous surnames that she had - married and maiden. Jeanette x
