Thank you Rosemary for you reply. The Franz Kolbe is another one with a similar name. Also thank you Jeanette and Maud. I agree with you both on what you say,but he must of died sometime, somewhere. I will try the Family relatives site you mention, hopefully I will be lucky like you. Sue

Agree with what Jeanette said re couple splitting up and one or both of them committing bigamy!! I searched for a very ;ong time for gt grandfathers death, his wife remarried in 1885, she & children were in workhouse in 1881, I thought, well perhaps he died and they were forced to go in workhouse, therefore, he must have died befoe 1881, simple..I thought..searched over and over again on 1837, no luck, assumed then, he may have gone back to Ireland. Then, I struck gold!! thought I would have sample the new site family relatives, paid my credits, and put his name in, WOW, it came up straight away, but in Liverpool, not Stafford where the family had been for years, and where wife & children were, so took a gamble & sent for death cert, sure it must be wrong, but no, correct age, occupation, correct spelling of name, it WAS him I`m sure of it, now, that means gt grannie married bigamously!! so yes, couples did then just pack up and go and get another partner, have the same suspicion about the other gt grandfather, he did not marry the lady, but was with her on 1891 & 1901 census as wife, but cannot find original wife, she must have done same thing, but without knowing what name she called herself, impossible so far to find her. Nothing new is there?

On the 1901 census there is a Franz Kolb, age 37, born in Holland, living with parents (born in Germany) in Southwark St George. He is listed as single.

Hi Susan, Is there a chance he could have died in another country? Maybe he didn't die at all at that time. Divorce was almost impossible in those days and a lot of couples split up and remarried, thus committing bigamy. Jeanette x

Help desperately needed. I have a rellie Franz Kolbe born 1870 Married Amy Bush 1891, London. Last child fathered Harold 1900, London Amy Kolbe married again 1916, London I assumed Franz must of died between 1899-1916 I have looked up on the 1837 site, no joy I have also looked up the Name Frank Colby, as I understand some of my rellies changed their names.
