Hi, Could anyone please tell me what this means. (1616) My thought would be along the lines of heafty fine for some misdemeanor against a local 'big-wig'. Or perhaps the equivilent of forfiture of property to the crown. Many thanks, Joan

(Just for fun, ) My Family name is OZYER. I have found my G.g.grand father was born in Ludlow, Shropshire, Dec. 1859 Typed Ozyer into Shropshireoline and came up with Le Ozyer Yard, in a document about/called licence of alienation. The name does appear fairly commonly in Turkey today so have presumed we may have originated there but no evidence yet. Joan

A search of the internet yielded this: 'This Great Seal is attached by a parchment tag to a 'licence of alienation' dated 2 September 1586, granting Royal permission to transfer land in the parish of Kingswood, Wiltshire from John Poynte, esq. to John Bridges, the elder.' so it seems to mean the granting of permission to pass land or property on to someone else which I suppose in those days was needed because people only held land by permission of the King. All the references I found seemed to be linked to wills and property transfers.
