Dear Sioux - this definitely sounds like g.g.grandad! Spofforth is the village just up the road to the Stockeld Estate and the age is correct. You say the image is incorrect - does this mean its not very readable ? Do Ancestry correct - I'm getting all excited...............!!!

Pauline, I've had a looksee on Ancestry. There is a Michael R Jackson age 41 Born Spofforth Yorkshire (about 4 to 6 miles up the road from Stockeld by the look of the map) and living in Birmingham on the 1871 census. Unfortunately the image is incorrect and isn't showing any detail :( Ancestry has his wife listed as a 50 year old Sarah. I've reported the image as incorrect, sadly this just makes it more tantalising than helpful. Sioux

Thanks for the suggestions - quite a common name unfortunately, which doesn't help. Michael Richard Jackson married second wife Mary Cannell (widow) 1876. I think the 1861 census would help but where do you look!!

If you give us his name, we can check on Ancestry to see where he was in 1871 and hopefully who his wife was. Sam

You need to look within that time period for another marriage. You could try freebmd which isnt complete or 1837online pay to view or familyrelatives which I think is the best site for the years 1866-1920.

I know where my gt.grandfather was born (1829 Stockeld), where he studied to be a chemist(York), where he was in 1851 (Brompton on Swale) and where he died in Wolverhampton (1888). However, when he married my gt.grandmother in 1876 he was shown as a widower, so where was he for that 25years? He was also a Catholic which makes the records more difficult to trace but he moved from Yorkshire to Staffordshire at some time, and who was his first wife? Anybody got any suggestions on where I look?
