Birth records for Gibraltar

Hi, I'm trying to find birth records for my g-grandfather, John Frederick Relle, who I have been told was born in Gibraltar. At one point, I know his father was bandmaster of the King's Own Borderers, but don't think they were in Gibraltar around 1871 when JFR was born. I've searched all the overseas records on 1837online and nothing came up - they say this in their reference docs: 'Where the country still has a strong link to Britain, there is “no provision” (NP) for separate registration. NP territories include Australia, Canada, Falklands, Gibraltar, New Zealand and various islands in the British West Indies (including Bermuda). In other words, it would be expected that a birth, marriage or death of a British national in a NP country would be registered within the domestic civil registration system of the country concerned and not separately at the Consulate or High Commission – therefore they would not appear in the GRO’s overseas indexes.' I've also found links to the allgibraltar site, but this doesn't seem to exist any more? So where should I look next for his birth certificate? Am planning on going to PRO at some point to look at Army Records for my g-g-gf, but won't be able to do that for a while. Thanks for any help, cheers, Angela

The most likely place for your information will be Kew, although I did think overseas births were going to be on 1837 online. My youngest son was born in Germany in 1974 as we were stationed there with the RAF and his birth wasn't on 1837 last time I looked.

Hi, Thanks for that - I sent the webmaster details of an inscription on a baton that we have that was presented to Moritz Relle (the bandmaster), because it fills in a gap they have in their bandmaster list - haven't had any response though... cheers, Angela
