It might be worth seeing if the relevant local BMD site (if it exists) has the record you're after before shelling out. If you look on www.ukbmd.org.uk there's a list of them. It's in alpha-order - but make sure you scroll right through because it's in two sections and starts again for the second lot. Christine

Another good thing is that the BMD's go up to almost present day (not sure of exact date) which freebmd doesn't.

You can look up civil registrations of births, marriages and deaths from the end of 1837 up to the present day, and get a reference number (volume and page) which you can then use to order the certificate via a link on their website. You have to buy some credits and then do a search and you will get a list of pages which may contain the name you are looking for, to look at each page will cost a credit (occasionally a page will be free if the quality of reproduction is bad) and you have to look through them to find what you're looking for. They also have a few counties of the 1861 census to search / look at online but the quality of transcription for that is patchy. (If you see the images, some of them look to be water-damaged, so it's not surprising). Each image or transcription of household that you look at of the 1861 census costs 3 credits. It might be best to look for the births, marriages or deaths on FreeBMD first and if you find it just check the entry on 1837 to make sure the volume and page number are right, but if you don't find it on FreeBMD start searching on 1837, it's cheaper that way! There are also some entries for births, marriages and deaths of British subjects overseas which you can search. I have tried it for various of my ancestors but never found any of them.

Hi Claire If you go to the site 1837online(.)com you can have a site tour without having to pay. You only pay when you look at images Sarah
