Decided tonight it was time to sort out my atrocious filing system as it's been getting on my nerves for quite some time - just thought I'd get rid of a lot of the paperwork with all the snippets scrawled everywhere not in any particular order. Sooooooo.. printed family group off, printed BMD for each person - also writing those details down to transfer to FTM. Writing down each census they've appeared on with all details inc address. Writing a list of queries and 'still to find' down. Recording any extra bits of info I've discovered like which graveyard they're buried in plus printing off any info regarding this info. Filing any certificates I've received. Only completed 1 family group so far and my paperwork has grown 10 fold! Have I gone completely bonkers? Debby

YOU LOT ARE FAR TOO IMPATIENT!

Yes, but so have we all. I have FTM and thought when I'd got all my information on it I could get rid of some of the mountains of paper, but now most of my information is on the program, I still can't bear to throw out any of the paper...even the torn bits, old envelopes and any other bits of paper I had at hand when writing down snippets. I guess it will just get worse and never better. Kath. x

Debby Of course you are bonkers. It goes with family history. I know how you feel, I seem to be recording the same info over and over again and not feeling that I am getting anywhere. nell (definitely bonkers)

Can you get your notes on to index cards and then file them in a neat little box? you could assign everyone a number and but it in the notes on your tree package so you can link the two together. otherwise learn to wright smaller to take up less room.

If the filing system makes sense to you, then no. If you have the stamina to do this for all your family groups, then no. If you are already bored with the whole excercise, then yes. Whatever system you have, and there have been plenty of threads on this, it has got to be something that works for you, where everything is readily to hand and easy to maintain. Speaking personally, I'd like a secretary!

Bored with it? Never in a million years - I just think the problem is getting all the relative info for a family into one place so you're not flicking through reams and reams of info each time you need to look something up! Wish I'd been more methodical when I first started this lark to save me rewriting something I know I already have somewhere! Debby

That's the thing though Margaret - I'm copying stuff down but still daren't throw out the old copy! I'm determined to get organised and get into some routine with it all if it kills me! It's just madness! Debby
