I am trying to find out any information on a Patrick John Hayes who was born in the Ireland in 1917. He joined the navy and then settled in Clapham in London. His mother was Bridget Hayes who died in 1977 and he died in 1982. Believe he was married to a Margaret Mcarthy. No-one seems to know anything - please help me. Thanks

The LDS centre in London has the GRO indexes for Ireland. They started in 1864. Probably the best bet would be to look at his death cert and see if it says where in Ireland he was born (post 1969 certs should have this info on them, given by the informant). And then you should have a rough area to look out for when searching through the indexes at the LDS centre.

Marnie - he was born in 1917, so that can't be him in the 1871. :-)

Marnie, thanks for looking but I don't think so. I don't know when he joined the navy but I know he did his 2 years in the irish army. He enlisted in 1934 in Dublin I believe.

Hayes is quite a common Irish name so you really will have to find out more about him before you can locate him in Ireland. A COUNTY of origin is a MUST to have any chance of locating him. In my own study of Irish History I have come across many many Hayes and most seem to be called Patrick, in Tipperary, Limerick and Cork, all three quite big counties. The best way to try to locate his place and county of birth is to look into his Navy background. B 1917 he would be just the right age to be joining the Navy 1935 or thereabouts and just in time for the 2 World War. These Naval records are at MOD Gosport, Hampshire. If you can prove next of kin and send £25 with info on the ships he served then they will send you details of his career to include date and place of birth. You will need to give them some idea of what ships he served on as well as as many other details as possible. This is to ensure that they send you the correct details of the person you are interested in because there will be so many Patrick Hayes from Ireland in the Navy. I have my own father's naval details and they told me his exact place of birth in Ireland. Janet

Alison Have you obtained a copy of the death cert? There is a possibility in Q1 1982 in Southwark for a Patrick John Hayes with a dob in 1917. If you already have the death cert does it give you any additional information such as informant and address that could help you with some of your queries or give you another avenue to look at? With kind regards Karen
