Researching German births

Does anyone know whether the German births are available on-line, or at all, and if so, how far back do they go? Thank-you.

As far as I know, there is nothing available online. There are not very many records left at all, as so many were destroyed during the war. If you are lucky you may find parish records, similar to the ones we have here, but you would need to go to Germany to find them. There is a little bit of info on German Genealogy, but not a lot. www2.genealogy.net/genealogy.html

Hi Helen Try www(.)genealogy(.)about(.)com/ Click on 'genealogy by country' down the left hand side, and you should be able to find your way to Gemany. Lots of links and information. One of my favorite sites, hope it helps! Heather

I do know that if you don't know where in Germany they were born then you've hit a very hard brick wall! There is NO central records place or system in Germany. Parish records are all kept locally, and there are no national records or censuses that are much help (usually just a head count)

Hi Peter, John, Heather and Chloe. Thank-you to all of you for replying. It all sounds a bit gloomy! I do know the area where these people were born and there are lots of photos and documents. They seem to have gone back and forth between England and Germany (Prussia) and I think there may have been some sort of religious persecution or war that caused them to leave. At any rate, I wondered if I could track the family there.
