Hi Peter, I've no idea when my grandfather was actually serving on the Devonshire or his role. I have a photo where the hats clearly read HMS Devonshire, hence that's the only evidence I have. I believe he was a Navy Shipwright. Regards, Andy

If your grandfather was on the Devonshire in 1945 then in an indirect way his history and one of my Wifes relles cross The Devonshire was one of the first ships to enter Copenhagen at the end of the war. one of the tasks that befell some of the officers on board was to assess the damage done in the bombing of the Shell House and the Deaths of children when a school was accedentely bombed by the raiders after they misstook a crashed Mossy as the target. My wifes great Uncle was the pilot in that plane. He (Wing Com Peter Kleboe) and his Nav were killed out right when it crashed Lots of pics of the Devonshire if you gogal the name.

Thanks for all the replies. My grandfather was born around 1904...he died in 1976. I know that my father rarely saw him because he was away at sea. However, I do not know details of his length of service. I believe he served on more than one ship, and have a photo where the his hat reads HMS Devonshire. He was probably serving between the late mid-1920s up until after World War II. Are the records a Kew available by post or online? I live in the Czech Republic so not easy to pay a visit. Thanks, Andy

What period are we talking here, Andrew? My great uncle was in the navy up to about 1920 and his records are on open access at Kew(National Archives). At this period there are alphabetical indexes. You usually only get a single page, but it contains a great deal of information

Hello, Does anyone know if it's possible to request the service history of a deceased relative. My grandfather was in the Royal Navy, I'd be very interested to know when and where he served. regards, Andy
