Whats a good read?

Mark Herber's book would certainly help you get a decent sleep on the flight. It is worthy, but dreadfully dull. 'Who was your Granny's granny?' by Paul Blake and Audrey Collins has a livelier approach to getting started. Why not get a decent book on paleography (eg Grieve, Hilda Examples of English Handwriting 1150-1750 (1954) ) and work through the examples? None of the following are comprehensive narrative texts, but they are all fascinating in their own way: The Dictionary of Genealogy (5th edition) Terrick VH Fitzhugh Local Historians Encyclopedia by John Richardson Tate, W.E. The Parish Chest: a study of the records of parochial administration in England (1983) Titford, John Writing & Publishing your Family History (1996) Surnames and Genealogy: A New Approach by George Redmonds (2002) Whatever you take with you, enjoy the journey!

How about... A brief History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson. Should last the flight - and maybe the return one too, depending on how quickly you read :) OOPS, missed the 'about this hobby' bit. I stand by my suggestion though, excellent book, if a little heavy going sometimes.
