Hi Gerry, You have said that there are a lot of numbers on the certificate. The vol number is the large book in which the original certificate was put [where ever the person was born for example if born in england UK the records are in London] and the page is where the information is,only on one line though as thousands are in one volume. If your brother was born in England UK i will only be to gratefull to try and help you.Even if he was not i will try any way.

Thanks for replying so fast... I thought you Poms would have been in bed LoL. BMD's page shows the volume no as 8a Page 461. On my brothers original birth cert his Columns no is 452. I've been trying to trace my brother for some 15 years. It's a long story, but basically the adoption agency (where his file his held) refuse to help me further. They also have refused my request for his court/details as they know I will access his adoption certificate which will give me his surname (they have told me his new Christian name and that he lives in the North West) I have a list of all the David's adopted in that year from the Index of the Adopted Children Register. On this list is the No of entry and volumn no... all these numbers range form 441-446 and pretty close to my 452 on his birth cert.

Geraldine The column number (I think) is just a number for the entry in the original register. When you say the volume and page numbers aren't the same - they aren't the same as what exactly? nell

haven't got a clue what the numbers mean! Is this brother one that was GIVEN for adoption that you are trying to trace? It you are trying to cross ref the numbers for new name, then no , they aren't the same jess

I have just noticed on my adoptive brother's original birth certificate that there is a columns no. on the left hand side. Also, I have his birth page printed off from BMD, However, the Volume no and page no's are not the same. Can anyone one tell me what the number means on the birth certicfate? Cheers Gerry
