I came across a little girl in a workhouse on the 1871. She was named ANNIE NORTH KENT. She was about 5 years old. Place of birth was not known, comment that she was found deserted. I assume that she was named Annie North Kent because she was found in North Kent (she was living in North Kent at the time of 1871 and at the time of her death).

Someone mentioned on a thread the other day about seeing a baptism entry for a child that had been found on a doorstep so they gave her the surname PORCH! Lou

I was talking to someone who told me that her father, when found abandoned as a baby, was given the name of the street he was found in, as a surname.

I have an uncle that was a foundling and brought up at the thomas Coram foundling home in hertfordshire, where my Grandad was a 'warder'.It moved to Berkhamsted from London he tells the tale (apparently he asked why he had the name he did) that whoever it 's job was to name the children went thru the alphabet from A - Z for a christian name , moving on a letter for each succesive foundling (albert, benjamin, charles etc) and then Z-A for a surname ,My uncle got a surname beginging with Y How true it is we will never know but i heard the tale more than once My dad is still a member of the Coram Foundation because of his parents association jess

What would be the usual method of registration for an abandoned baby; obviously their parents names wouldn't be on the cert. Would a first name and surname be on it? Thanks.
