i went to Liverpool library (it has C of E & catholic registers on mircofiche for the Greater Liverpool area) i suggest going to your main library thanks guys

Forgot to say that if you google 'latin names' you can find a name converter on Rootsweb. It sounds like it could be useful to you. Louise

Hi Louise, This is probably your couple. James is usually written as Jacobus in Latin and Jane is often Jana but I have seen it as Joana as well. Louise PS. Where did you get you Catholic records from? I'm struggling on a couple of my catholic families! LOL

Jacobus is Latin for James (Hence Jacobean to describe James I's reign). So this does look like them. nell

from 1886 - (it was all in latin, which confused me even more) i was looking for a james connell & jane ward - but the only possible match was a Jacobum? Connell & a Joanna? Ward would these be the people?
