You get a campaign medal for active service. You usually do this for 6 months, but this can change tremendously. There is a medal you can get without active service. The LSGC (Long Service Good Conduct) medal. My Father received one.

There's a big campaign going on in the Portsmouth area to get a medal for the Arctic Veterans of WW2. Although they got a medal from the Russians for the vital work they did taking supplies to our then allies in horrendous conditions of extreme cold and danger they've never been recognised by our government with an Arctic Medal. This seems to be because the Russians stopped being allies at the end of the war. It seems a terrible injustice and the men involved must be gutted. My husband got an Atlantic Star, though we went through the war without, to his great frustration, ever seeing an angry shot fired!

Valerie I'm trying not to giggle, because nobody would have done at the time, but you think he would get an official medal for deserting? Which war are you talking about? the medal cards are online for ww1 and merchant seamen in ww2, (both on documents online) but I don't where you find ww2 soldiers' medals.

One of my grandfathers didn't. You have, I think, to serve in a theatre of war. He never left these shores.
