Thanks for your help everyone. I've been doing searches for evesons and eversons in towns beginning rain and rayn but no results. Evesons and eversons in Lancashire produce a very small list, but no towns with Rain or Rayn. I'm going to have to find him in the 1861 census and see what he put there. Alan

Hi Alan Have looked at the image and to me it looks more like Raynes. Had a look at the area index for 1861 Lancashire and the only places that look like they could possibly be mistrancribed as Raynes are the one Kathleen suggested or Rainhill, which is Liverpool but both were still Lancashire back then! There is a place in Cumbria called Rainors, according to multi-map. Kath. x

Just had a play with the image, messing about with contrast and brightness and it's pretty clear. Definately Lancashire and, going by the guy's lettering, Rayn_r. The missing letter looks very like an e. Rainow sounds very like it. Thanks Dea. Rainhill (the Parish) also sounds like it. I'll check to see if these places have any Evesons! Alan

It's in the 1871 census. If you have Ancestry, search for Joseph Everon - Deliberate mis-spelling, I'm sure he's an Eveson, probably my ggg-grandfather. Alan

No, I'm not from Lancashire. Try this site, though to see if anything is feasible. http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/Parishes.html#R

I'd say Raynor is a mistranscription. Where did you find the reference? nell
