Thanks for ideas so far - and for all the typing. Good idea to check for Charles Craft in 1861 - yes there is one, married Mary and two children the right age for the marriage I found - alas he is the wrong Charles! Mine, in 1861 is Charles Krafft married to Catherine(census) Back to the drawing board Peter

Registers now in London City district. As to marriage to dead wife's sister, yes it was illegal at that time so it could well be that they did not officially marry, but as no proof of status/identity was required they could equally have gone to London to marry where noone would have known the truth. If you order the Charles Craft certificate but with the checking point that you only want it if the wife was Catherine Brown you will only be charged £4 if it is not your man. www.1837online now has the London 1861 census. Would it be worth checking first to see if a Charles Craft appears there.

Could be that Miss Brown was Catherine Anne or Anne Catharine - unless you find her birth you wont know for sure. Looks like a trip to Chelmsford archive could clear your problem.

Problem I have is there isn't a Catherine Brown/Katherine Brown marriage corresponding, and the only Krafft Marriage in the time zone is Gustav Adolph in Colchester xmas day1856 and he is my gggrandfather (at least he married my gggrandmother but she seems to have been one of the original Essex girls) Peter
