OK, here goes. I am researching a William MACE b.1822 Deptford Kent. I have found his birth etc on LDS. On Ancestry 1871 census there is a William Mace b.1821 with a family, wifes name is Sarah (think I have found the marriage). But.....there is also another William Mace on there b.1822 same place Deptford his supposed wife is Harriet but I can find no marriage for them. To add to the confusion (I'm begining to confuse myself now) in the 81/91 census the William Mace supposedly married to Harriet is fudging his age and birthplace. What I'm trying to get at (not too well) is that I think these two William's in 1871 may be the same person. His married one and has kept the other one on the side. Or am I having a brain drain moment????????? Aaaaaaaaaaargh! Sam. |

Its a difficult one. I think the more than likely explanation is that they are cousins. Its infuriating but I have so many in my tree who had imagination bypasses when naming their kids. I guess its not impossible for him to have been playing away but probably unlikely. Unless he was middle/upper class and could afford it, supporting two 'wives' would not be possible. You'll have to order one of the childrens birth certificates and see who the mother is. |

Thankyou ladies for your replies. I have just looked at the 1861 census on 1837online. The William who later married Sarah is on there, I know it's him because his mother and sister are living with him. This other William is not on there, not that this proves much. I know the William I am interested in had his own butchers shop in Poplar high street. Would he have been considered as middle class? Enough to support 2 familes? From Sam. (who has a headache) |
