Can you find uptodate people (if you know what I mean?) My Grandmother died in 1990 - could I find that record? Or could I find my mothers birth 1935 or my grandfathers birth 1909? me born 1959?

Of course. Use 1837online website - it's pay to view.

The recent death would be on ancestry and the 1909 birth may well be on FreeBMD and ancestry, for the others if you want to find them online you would have to use one of the pay sites such as 1837 online or Family Relatives and maybe BMDIndex but I can't remember what date range BMDIndex covers.

Try phoning your nearest big library. Many of them have the GRO index on microfiche that you can search through. Just phone them first to check what dates they have, they may not have them all. Maggy

1837online is a pay per view site which has a complete list of England and Wales birth, marriage and deaths, from 1837 when registration began up to about 18 months ago. It gives you the reference numbers you need to order the certificates from the General Register Office. Kath. x

You could also try your local records office for the GRO index (General Records Office) Details would come under your local county/city council. For instance, Leicester/shire Records Office has the GRO but not any of the libraries. Find out where your local family history society is based and whether they have the index. Leicestershire have the records (and much else beside) but no current base - sob! If you're not a member there's a small charge but considering you could possibly spend a whole day there it's worth it! Jan
