When I married my second husband I had the registrar put my maiden name as my first married name was the same as his first wifes maiden name. Absolutely no family connection. Vivienne

Hi everyone Thanks for all your messages. I was beginning to despair! My Reads are from Southwark/Newington. Thanks for mentioning the possible re-marriage of 'in-laws', as I hadn't thought of that (only cousins). It was just so disappointing, as I'd hoped the birth certificate would give me a nice, unusual maiden name. Even a 'Smith' would have been more useful than another Read!! Thanks for all your support! Especially from fellow Read hunters! Best wishes. Natalie

Peternell Adams had parents Nicholas Adams and Joan Adams, grandparents William Adams, Mary Adams, William Adams and Joan Adams I'm not convinced that any of them were as close as first cousins, but my brain goes to goo each time I try to sort them out.

Natalie I have Reads from Berkshire who did this!! I also have Reads in Middlesex (didn't seem to marry each other though!!) I have lots of ancestors all over my tree that were cousins who seemed to marry into each others famillies again. Sarah

Hi Natalie It's quite possible that they were related. It was (and still is) legal for first cousins to marry so they could be cousins. Sam

I'm having a BAD certificate day! (see Tinker, Tailor thread!). Finally, got hold of my G.G.Grandfather's bith certificate in great hopes that someone with a boring name like John Read would have married a 'Berenice Blenkinsopp' or something. But, oh no! Under mother's name it says Elizabeth READ formerly READ. Cousins? Forgot maiden name or confused??? Co-incidence? GRRRRRRRRRR
