Wait until you get twins John Edward and John Charles marrying (in the same month at the same place) to twin sisters Mary Ann and Mary Elizabeth, who then proceed to each have their first child one month apart - and call it Joseph. AAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH

It is VERY unusual to have two living children of the same parents with identical names. However, Mary Ann, Maria, Marrianne and Mary were often regarded as names in their own right. Like g-granny, christened with a supreme lack of imagination, Eliza Elizabeth.

I think one of my rellies had two Sarah's , I have still to confirm this, but when asking about it I have heard is was common, to name one after a dead child. To keep the memory and carry on the name. Marion

Might have been Mary Ann and Mary Ellen or something like that..... were both Grandmothers (maternal and paternal) called Mary? Maybe they didnt actually call them Mary in talking they maybe referred to them by their middle names :-) It is odd.. but I came to the conclusion years ago that my ancestors were totally nuts!! LOL Shaz xx

Mary A was more than likely Mary-Ann and then Mary E was just called Mary does seem strange though

In my family I had a Mary L in 1871 census. This changed to Louisa in 1881 as her sister Mary was born in 1875. When i found the birth for the first one she was actually Louisa mary and the second one was Mary. Mum must have really loved the name!!??

maybe one was his step daughter, although thats unusual in that day and age. One of the Mary's mothers may have married him because she was widdowed, and already had a girl called mary.

Was it common to name two children in the family the same name??? My greatgrandfather had 2 sisters called mary!! Mary E and Mary A seems very odd to me.
