Sam - Have you found any of them in 1891? If they pop up then, or even in 1901, then they are probably mistranscribed in 1881. If you can't find them in the later census, they may well have died/married/emigrated.

Richard, You are an absolute peach! This could very well be the boy's deaths. I think I will order the death certificates and see if there are any clues on there, informant etc. Interesting that they both died the same year, their father Edward died in 1872 of TB, then William was in hospital in 81. I wonder if this could all be TB linked? Anyway thankyou for your fresh eyes, A happier Sam.

And this could be James' death: Deaths Dec 1879 Goatley James 11 Strand 1b 464 That just leaves Agnes & Lydia unaccounted for... and of course they could have married by 1881, or more likely have been in service somewhere (and subsequently got mistranscribed on the census!).

No worries Sam. Could this be Edward's death in 1879? Age is a bit out, but only by a year or so: Deaths Jun 1879 Goatley Edward 18 Kensington 1a 115

Richard, Blimey! I think you could be right, the age and birthplace match. Which website was this from? Thankyou. *UPDATE* Richard, yep I can see Emily on Ancestry. Thanks again!

I have this family living all together on the 1871 census; Edward Goatley b.1836 Reading. Eleanor Goatley b.1839 Oxford. Emily Mary Ann Goatley b.1858 Reading. Edward b.1859 Chelsea. Eleanor b.1861 Reading. Lydia b.1863 Surrey. Agnes b.1865 Surrey. James b.1868 Surrey. William b.1871 Lambeth. I know in 1872 Edward (head) died. In 1881 Eleanor and her daughter Eleanor are living together in Marylebone and William is in Kings College Hospital. But I can't find any of the other children in 1881. These are their given first names, I've checked on 1837online. I would really appreciate any help, From a miserable Sam
