Have been given a copy of family historian which I have not opened yet because I made contact with family members in my tree. They all have family tree maker but I don't know where to start. Can anyone help with advice on computer programmes Elaine

I have the Family Historian and find it really easy to use. I especially like the easy way (once you get the hang of it) of being able to put photographs on. You can take group photographs and literally attach just one face to a specific name in your tree if you want. I also like the way the Family Historian allows you to save you data as a GEDCOM file which you can then open up each time. The draw back I have is that it doesn't produce pretty family charts. I don't know anything about the other programme so I can't compare them for you. Jenny

Hi, I think most of us are pleased with Family Treemaker 2005 - if you put a search in on this board there are a lot of threads about peoples preferences. Also I think it was Peter who pointed out an article in Your Family Tree Magazine recently which had assessed a number of programs and FT2005 came out top.

Hi Elaine I`ve got Family Historian as well. I`ve said before on this site , that I wish it had a separate manual! Also, how do you get a complete descendancy list, mayby Jennifer has found out? It is English, but I think the majority are going for FTM. Keith

Keith, I agree it would be helpful if the FH manual came in book form ( though I've found most things out by experimenting rather than looking at the help pages) Two descendancy report options: 1 Go to Reports, select Miscellaneous Reports from drop down menu then select Descendant Outline and choose start person from list of names 2 Go to Reports, select Narrative Reports then Descendants by Generations

Judith Thankyou for that info, I`ll give it a go! I did download the one from 'Ancestry'and found the descendancy option easy. Keith
