Not sure on that one Patricia. But if they don't then the Reference Library at the Harris Museum in Preston might be a good bet. Janet.

Thanks for that, Janet I think I'll be going during next week, so hopefully it won't be as busy as a Saturday. Do you know if they have archives of local newspapers there? Regards Patricia

Patricia The Lancashire Records Office has a wealth of information from census information and parish registers, maps and a vast library of information. They have quite a few microfiche and microfilm readers which I don't think you have to book (I never have) but if it's busy you may have to wait to use one. If you are thinking of going this Saturday I would advise you to get there for it opening. I went last month on the Saturday opening and by 11am nearly all of the microfiche and film readers were in use. You will need a readers ticket so you'll need to take some official form of I/D which includes your name, address and signature. And you'll need £1 coin for the locker. Oh and it's pencils only in the searchroom. The staff are very helpful and so are the other people there researching their family history. Good idea to ring and check that they have what you are after. They also have an information pack which they give out to people who haven't been to the records office before. Hope you enjoy your visit and find the information you are searching for. Janet

Hi Joan I'm hoping to look for (and find!) some records of my late grandfather who I know had a criminal record!! I believe that there's some records kept there but I do plan to take your advice and contact them so that they know what I'll be looking for; I've had it on good authority that what I'm digging for should be kept there. Other than that, I'm not sure what else I'll find there, that's why I need the good advice from kind folks like yourself, as I've never visited an RO before. Any other tips welcome. Thanks Patricia

What are you hoping to find? Might be a good idea to ring ahead and ask to reserve a micrifilm reader if you will be looking at parish records. I've always found the staff at record offices very helpful Good hunting Joan

I'm planning on visiting the Preston RO shortly; can anyone advise me on what I'll find/what to look for? This will be my first visit to a RO, so I don't want to waste any time! Any advice very welcome. Thanks in advance (I'm off to work now, so will check board later on in day) Patricia
